Actually, why is Jesus eating all the time? He eats with the Pharisees, with sinners, with his disciples... Because hospitality always opens space for encounter, sharing one's life with others. And it is precisely for this that Jesus came to earth - he poured out his whole life for us.
Hospitality means eating with people, hosting them, but even more, it is an attitude of generosity: "I want to be generous, because God is generous to me." It means opening our home, our private space to friends and strangers. Yes, it can be exhausting and it can cost financially. But if we serve them, they will be blessed and so will we! And who knows, maybe that stranger is actually an angel? 😉
Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. (Hebrews 13:2)
Treating our guests and visitors as if they could be angels - wow, that's a high standard. But it makes us realise that hospitality also has a sacred value. Challenging!
